Last month, news hit the wire that the highly anticipated film had been purchased by Amazon Studios from Paramount Pictures.

The move would mean that the Eddie Murphy led production – which is a sequel to 1988 blockbuster ‘Coming To America’ – would arrive on Amazon’s Prime Video streaming services instead of theaters.

Moments ago, the media giant confirmed it has acquired worldwide rights to ‘Coming 2 America’ from Paramount.

The film, which was scheduled for a Christmas launch before the move, will now launch worldwide in over 240 countries and territories on Prime Video on March 5, 2021.

Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon Studios, said in a statement:

“Coming to America was a cultural phenomenon that is one of the most loved and celebrated comedies of all time. Thanks to Eddie Murphy’s comedic genius along with the brilliant filmmakers, writers and fabulous cast, we couldn’t be more excited to celebrate this new adventure. We know audiences around the world will fall in love with this hilarious, joyful movie that will surely become a timeless favourite.”

Its producer Kevin Misher added:

“What could be better than a return to Zamunda? We are so excited for Amazon Studios to bring Eddie Murphy and Coming 2 America to a worldwide audience where they can laugh again with characters they have loved for 30 years, and meet new ones that they will love for years to come.”

The news comes as the film industry grapples with the effects of the global health crisis. Indeed, a number of studios have pivoted towards streaming to off-set the issues surrounding theater closures.

Anchored by the returning duo Murphy and Arsenio Hall, this chapter sees Prince Akeem on the cusp of becoming king of Zamunda when he discovers he has a son he never knew about in America — a street-savvy Queens native named Lavelle. To honor the former king’s dying wish to groom his grandson as the crown prince, Akeem and Semmi head back to America.

Joining the cast for the 2021 revival are the likes of Tracy Morgan, Jay Pharaoh, Jermaine Fowler, and Wesley Snipes.

The original ‘Coming To America’ proved to be a cultural phenomenon and has grossed a colossal $300 Million to date.

Suffice to say, with the success of the first film and now Amazon’s involvement, all eyes will be on how this fares.

We’re excited. Are you?!

What would it really cost to file this movie away for a later theatrical release? Seems like the studio is throwing it away and putting more faith in their other movies like A Quiet Place II. Amazon is not a great alternative to the big screen. Their streaming quality is well below average compared to other platforms.
